Primarily found in the Mediterranean Sea, especially off the shores of Italy, Sardinia, and the Adriatic Sea, in smaller quantities they can be seen in various areas of the western Pacific Ocean and Japan.
Red Coral begins as an organic product. These marine polyps are tiny little sea creatures that build out skeletons of calcium carbonate. Through centuries, these polyps build their branching skeleton into dense, red coral forms that are collected and cut and polished into jewelry and decorative items. Coral does not resemble any other gemstone; it has an opaque, matte appearance and takes on a lovely luster when polished. Perfect for beads, cabochons, and carved shapes.
Red Coral is an important stone from time immemorial, of cultural and historical importance. The ancient Romans and Greeks were known to employ it as a protective amulet, while in Hindu and Vedic astrology, the stone is connected with the Mars planet, believed to provide courage, strength, but also to infuse some vitality. Ayurveda also considers the stone as emphasizing balancing impacts on the body’s energy to offer an increase in blood health and the increase of confidence.
The stone is sturdy enough to be worn daily, although it has to be treated separately not to lose its polish or corrode from chemicals. Red Coral continues to be in vogue in vintage as well as in contemporary jewelry due to its bright hue, symbolic value, and mythological curative properties.
